When I play music from my phone through the amp with an auxiliary chord, it just sounds muffled compared to my phone speakers or my headphone speakers. Is it the speaker or is there something that has to be done with gateway?

This will be the speaker, the speaker is designed for a guitar, and is in mono, not stereo, you will not get the clear sound that you would through your phone or headphones, the output coming from the phone via the auxiliary might be to large and will cause a muffled sound.
