Volume adjustments on the fly for live playing

I have a Marshall Code 50 with the 4 way footswitch. I have learned how to activate the various effects in switch mode, but I haven't found a solid volume adjustment workaround. For instance, if I am playing rhythm and need to go lead, I can activate a switch and go to distortion, but the level isn't adequate to drive the sound to the right volume for a lead guitar. I have tried adjusting the "level", but it won't go over the master level on the preamp volume-wise. Is there a "volume pedal" like solution for this? I am not sure if I can run a volume pedal in sequence with the footswitch, has anyone tried this?

Change the volume of active preset to desired level with VOLUME pot (NOT MASTER), and store new preset setting (press and hold EXIT/STORE button until the display reads "Saved").

Repeat this for all presets you want to use.
